What to Do When You Find Rodents in Your Home

Mouse

It’s one thing when you see rats skirting below the subway tracks of New York City, but it’s a whole different ball game with they show up in your own home. The shock and feeling of violation are completely valid. Rats are some of the largest pests out there; they carry disease and create destruction wherever they go.

Preventative Measures

As with all pests, it’s best to first learn how to prevent rodents from coming on the scene. Here are a few tips to keep the problem from starting.

  • Search for and fill openings in your home. Though many rats are large, they can squeeze through tiny openings, so be sure to seal up any cracks, holes, or any openings even as small as a quarter.
  • Store your food in sealed containers. Rats will come even for small amounts of food, so be sure to clean spills, sweep crumbs, and keep counters clean. Seal your food in airtight containers and be sure to do the same with pet food.
  • Make sure you don’t have any leaky faucets, which may entice thirsty rats.
  • Keep a lid on your garbage can, especially if you throw leftover food in the can.

What to Do When You Find Rats

Despite your best efforts you, unfortunately, may still have rodents sighting in your home. Signs of rats include droppings, chewed cords or wood, and skittering sounds in the walls and ceilings.

If you do find rats in your home, act immediately. You can set up wire cage traps to get rid of them in the most humane way. The most effective method is to call the professionals. Sage Pest Control can help with rodent control.
